Vegan MoFo day 4: Oh, Canada

When we headed to Toronto after visiting our good friends Amanda and Jesse in St Catharines, Canada, last year, I had two requests. I wanted to go to the Harry Potter exhibition at the Ontario Science Centre, and I wanted poutine. I got the former (I was even sorted by a genuine British guy wizard- I’m a Ravenclaw). But when we approached the only place in Toronto that makes vegan poutine, we were met with the saddest of sights- a ‘Closed Mondays’ sign in a darkened window.

Jesse and Chadwiko venture in for a closer inspection, verifying that yes, it's still Monday and yes, they're still closed

I lived with the bitter disappointment for over a year. Until I decided to spend Vegan MoFo exploring the world of street food and, coincidentally, the wonderful Bryanna Clark Grogan released her newest book, World Vegan Feast- which just so happens to contain a recipe for poutine! This is no half-arsed recipe containing a cup of pre-made vegan cheese. No, Bryanna has her own recipe for the real thing, or as real as a vegan version can be- tofu cheese curds!

Poutine

Other than leaning that poutine is really difficult to take remotely appetising photos of, I also learned that you can make great cheese curds using a microwave. I’ve never tried the real thing so I can’t compare the two, but the texture of these was exactly as I’d imagined it should be. I’ve also never been a big fan of gravy, but this one was delicious. I should have known that if anyone could make me actually enjoy gravy, it would be Bryanna.

So you know what, Toronto? I like you, but I don’t need you. I’ve found someone else to meet my poutine-related needs (it’s me). But I hope we can still be friends.

  1. Poutine!! I love cheesy chips & chips & gravy but I still haven’t made poutine. I need to get on that because I know it’ll be awesome!

I miss poutine so hard. I was planning on getting this book at somepoint anyway, but I think I need to venture onto amazon now, like right now.

  5. It’s so sad when you travel all the way for a specific place and it’s close, I had that happen to me in Melbourne. That’s also the only place I’ve seen poutine here, at Lord of the Fries.

  8. “Never been a fan of gravy…” ((**GASP**)) Well, I suppose I can overlook that, considering this recipe looks AWESOME! Great job! Now I REALLY need to try it!! I have the book and was actually planning to review this same recipe for VeganMoFo, …since my entire theme is “gravy”…
